Zaanse Schans (windmill-park)


Zaanse Schans is a neighborhood in de city of Zaandam and features an open-air museum and an outdoor park with a collection of historical windmills. It can be visited any time of the year, but some windmills may be closed during the winter-months. Next to the windmills you can also see distinct green wooden houses, see clogs being made or visit the cheese-farm "Catharina Hoeve". Although many visitors stroll past the unique sights, people also still live here. There is no entrance-fee, but for some attractions like windmills or the museum you have to pay a small amount.


How to get there:


By train: From Amsterdam Central Station, you take the train with direction "Uitgeest" and get off at station "Zaandijk Zaanse Schans". Trains run regularly (every 10-20 minutes) and the train-ride takes around 20 minutes. From there, it takes around 15 minutes to walk to Zaanse Schans.


By bus: From Amsterdam Central Station, take bus 391 (bus-company = Rnet) with direction "Zaandam Z. Schans". The bus-station is at the back of the train-station (water-front). During daytime busses run every 15 minutes, and the bus-ride takes around 40 minutes. Exit at busstop “Zaanse Schans, Zaandam”, which is right at the entrance.

Volendam, Edam, Marken (fishing villages)


Quaint fishing villages located north-east of Amsterdam, known for their colourful wooden houses, the nostalgic atmosphere and traditional costumes. In Volendam you will also find a cheese-making factory and many places to taste the local fish-delicacies, like “Haring” (Herring) or the “Kibberling”, which are tasty battered chunks of fish. 


How to get there:


By bus: to Volendam: From Amsterdam Central Station, take bus 316 (bus-company = Rnet) with direction "Volendam-Edam". The bus-station is at the back of the train-station (water-front). During daytime busses run every 15 minutes, and the bus-ride takes around 30 minutes.


By ferry: to Marken: From Volendam, you can take the ferry to Marken. You’ll find the ferry-services at the harbor in Volendam. The ferries run from 11am – 5pm and the ferry-ride will take around 30 minutes. From Marken you can take bus 315 back to Amsterdam. Bus 315 stops at Amsterdam North, from where you can take the metro back to Amsterdam Central Station.


By tour-bus: If you prefer to join an organized tour, you can find plenty of providers online that organize excursions to Volendam and Marken by touring car.

Keukenhof (tulip-fields)


The Keukenhof, also known as the “Garden of Europe” is one of the worlds largest flower-gardens with around 7 million flower bulbs planted each year. It is widely known for its tulips, but also features numerous other flowers, like hyacinths, daffodils, lilies, roses, carnations and irises. The garden is located within the “Dune and Bulb Region” of The Netherlands (south-west of Amsterdam) and is open to the genearl public for a world-renowned 8 week tulip display from mid-March to mid-May. In 2024, the garden will be open from March 21st – May 12th, from 8am – 7:30pm.


How to get there:


There are 2 ways to get to the Keukenhof by public transport:

1) Take the metro M52 from station Rokin (Dam-square) to station RAI (Europaplein) – which is 3 stops – and switch to Keukenhof-bus 852. The entire journey will take around 1,5 hours.

2) Take the train from Amsterdam Central Station to Schiphol Airport and switch to Keukenhof-bus 858. The entire journey will take around 1,5 hours.
